Antike und Abendland

期刊简介：Antike und Abendland. Beiträge zum Verständnis der Griechen und Römer und ihres Nachlebens [Antiquity and ‚Abendland‘. Contributions to the Understanding of the Greeks and Romans and their Afterlife was founded in 1945 by Bruno Snell as the successor to Werner Jaeger‘s Die Antike. Zeitschrift für Kunst und Kultur des klassischen Altertums [Antiquity. Journal for the Art and Culture of Classical Antiquity] (1925–1944; edited by Wolfgang Schadewaldt, Bernhard Schweitzer, and Johannes Stroux after Jaeger's emigration in 1936). The title was programmatic in several respects. The expansion of ‚Antiquity‘ by ‚Abendland‘ (or Occident), and ‘Classical Antiquity‘ by ‚Afterlife‘, marked a clear departure from antiquity as the sole epoch in focus. Furthermore, it replaced, immediately after World War II, a lopsided German view by an 'occidental' panorama. With this comparative perspective in operation since the 1950s, the yearbook has established itself internationally as a forum for interdisciplinary discussions of topics covering the field of antiquity and the history of its reception. Amongst the disciplines represented on the editorial board are Classical Philology, Ancient History, Early Modern History, German Studies, Romance Studies, and English Studies.
