As the world's senior journal of record for the South Asian region, South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies publishes peer-reviewed scholarly work covering the history, society, economy, culture, politics and international relations of the South Asian region, combining disciplinary depth with interdisciplinary accessibility. As a multidisciplinary journal, we aim to publish original, cutting-edge and conceptually interesting research that shapes and leads debates in South Asian studies. This means that we only consider papers that are related to the South Asia region (India, Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Bhutan, Afghanistan and the diaspora). We expressly do not publish papers that do not address South Asia or its diaspora; are more firmly based in the social sciences (especially quantitative work); that rely on econometrics or other data-heavy/mathematical approaches; or whose conclusions are based in policy recommendations. Nor do we publish unsolicited book reviews or literature reviews. If your paper does not contribute to South Asian Studies and/or is not within one of the disciplines listed above, it is unlikely to be a good fit for us. If in doubt, we recommend that you send your paper to the journals you find yourself citing; that way, you can be sure that you are engaging with the kinds of discussions they are hosting. We highly recommend that you read through our 'avoiding desk rejection' guidelines , which also includes examples of the kind of work we publish, categorised broadly by discipline. The journal is published six times a year. We welcome individual submissions as well as proposals for special issues or sections on themed topics. In print since 1971, South Asia is published under the authority of the South Asian Studies Association of Australia (SASAA). Members of SASAA receive South Asia as part of their membership and free access to all back issues via the Taylor & Francis website. Please visit the SASAA website to inquire into becoming a member. Submission Process Submissions If you wish to submit a paper to South Asia , please click here for author instructions . Please note that our process is very competitive. We receive a high number of submissions annually, and so cannot consider papers that do not align with our aims and scope or follow our author instructions. To save you (and us!) time, please therefore read through the author instructions carefully before submitting your article . Peer Review Papers must pass through up to three layers of review: a preliminary review by the Editors; a more specialised review by an Associate Editor; and, if the paper is deemed to be important and relevant to the journal’s scope, it is sent out to two external reviewers who are specialists in the field. Wherever possible, we endeavour to have all external reviews completed within five months. After external review, papers are either accepted (almost invariably with revisions), or declined. All external reviews are double anonymised, meaning neither the author's nor the reviewer’s identities are known outside the editorial office. In the interests of enhancing scholarship in the field, papers that are not accepted will still be provided with readers’ reports. Papers that are only reviewed internally will not be provided with extensive feedback. Publication Timeline We endeavour to publish material expeditiously. Generally, papers accepted for publication currently take ca. twelve months to appear in print, and about eleven months in electronic form . We work with our publisher, Taylor & Francis, to market published papers through social media and academic networks in order to put them in the hands of eminent readers and to reach as broad an audience as possible. Our marketing is aimed at enhancing the journal’s impact on the field. Book Reviews Policy South Asia publishes original essays that evaluate important academic trends and debates in South Asian studies through an engagement with recently published scholarly books in the field . These book forums are also subect to external peer review. The journal does not publish individual book reviews, accept unsolicited suggestions for review, or review translations, fiction, poetry, or self-published books. Call for Papers Authors are welcome to submit their work to us at any time. We only issue CfPs for certain special sections and issues. Special Issues and Sections Proposals South Asia welcomes proposals for guest-edited special issues (full issue, i.e., 13 papers) or special sections (4–10 papers) that shape major conversations in South Asian studies. Proposals are considered biannually, generally in April and November. Proposals should include: Provisional title Guest Editor(s) name(s), contact information and 1-page CV(s) 2000-word concept note A brief summary of how the Guest Editors plan to assist their contributors (e.g. through writing workshops; proofreading; one-to-one meetings and feedback, etc) Abstracts and brief contributor bios A more detailed guideline for proposals, including information on the special issue/section process, is available here or from Mhairi Montgomery, mont@southasianstudies.org.au . Proposals should be sent to the same address. Call for Papers Guest Editors may also use our platform to issue a CFP for an accepted proposal. Any open CFPs will be listed on the journal's homepage .
