Ethnoarchaeology

期刊简介：Ethnoarchaeology is a double-anonymized, peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to publishing original research conducted in ethnographic or experimental contexts with clear relevance to archaeological inquiry. We welcome contributions that use ethnographic observation, experimental replication, or practice-based approaches to illuminate archaeological questions, as well as archaeological studies that explicitly integrate such comparative or experimental perspectives. Ethnoarchaeology and experimental archaeology today encompass a wide array of theoretical and methodological approaches. Ethnoarchaeology engages with archaeology as anthropology, as history, and as science; with archaeology as the study of contemporary societies; and with broad epistemological debates across the humanities and social sciences. The journal therefore publishes significant case studies and review articles that advance our understanding of material culture, human behaviour, and the archaeological record—past, present, and future. Contributions addressing tangible and intangible heritage, traditional knowledge, and community-based or collaborative research frameworks are particularly welcome. Appropriate submissions should demonstrate engagement with relevant ethnographic, experimental, or archaeological literature and must articulate the archaeological significance of their findings. The language of the journal is English, and its scope is fully international. While English is the primary language of the journal, we strongly support the inclusion of multilingual abstracts. Authors are encouraged to provide translations into any language deemed appropriate for enhancing community-level dissemination among the groups involved in the study. This practice promotes active participation, recognition, and benefit-sharing with collaborating communities and reinforces the journal’s commitment to ethical, inclusive research. The journal does not allow peer review in languages other than English. Therefore, we kindly ask authors who wish to submit a paper with an abstract in a different language to provide a correct English translation. This translation should be submitted in its final version after the paper is accepted. In keeping with its long tradition, Ethnoarchaeology continues to be a space for experimental, context-rich research. The journal is now well positioned to consolidate these core strengths while expanding its thematic, geographical, and methodological reach. Moving forward, we aim to advance the journal through four key priorities: 1. Theoretical innovation – by fostering comparative and cross-cultural approaches that move beyond localised studies and promote broader analytical synthesis. 2. Quantitative and computational approache s – by encouraging submissions that incorporate modelling, digital methods, statistical frameworks, and other analytical tools that reflect emerging trends in the discipline. The journal actively encourages the submission of digital materials, including 3D models, high-resolution figures, and large datasets, particularly as supplementary material 3. Epistemological openness – by actively engaging Indigenous knowledge systems, collaborative and community-driven models, and ethical research practices across diverse cultural contexts. 4. Academic inclusivity – by supporting early-career researchers and scholars from underrepresented regions through mentorship, editorial guidance, and outreach efforts. The journal is especially interested in contributions that integrate rigorous field ethnography with analytical frameworks capable of supporting data-driven hypothesis generation based in experimental archaeology. In this sense, Ethnoarchaeology is uniquely positioned to act as a conceptual bridge between the material past and the social present, facilitating dialogue across disciplinary and regional boundaries. Conflict of Interest and Ethical Compliance All submissions must adhere to the highest standards of ethical research practice. Authors are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest—financial, professional, or personal—that may have influenced the research or its interpretation. Manuscripts involving ethnographic, experimental, or community-based research must include evidence of appropriate ethical approval and informed consent procedures, in accordance with institutional and international guidelines. These documents will be requested at the time of submission and must be provided before a manuscript can proceed to peer review. The journal reserves the right to reject any submission that fails to meet these ethical requirements. Where formal ethical approval from the authors’ home institution or a recognized research ethics committee is available, authors must provide documentation at the time of submission. Where such approval is not available—for example, because the authors’ institution does not maintain a formal ethics review board—authors are required to submit an Ethical Compliance Statement upon submission. This statement must clearly articulate the ethical framework guiding the research and should include, where applicable: ● the objectives and scope of the research; ● the types of participants involved (e.g. individuals, communities, students, local collaborators); ● procedures for obtaining informed consent (written, oral, collective, or ongoing); ● strategies for anonymization, confidentiality, and protection of sensitive data; ● approaches to the dissemination and restitution of results to participating communities; ● identification of potential social, cultural, political, or ethical risks, and the measures taken to mitigate them. The journal acknowledges the diversity of institutional contexts in which ethnoarchaeological research is conducted. Authors are required to provide a clear ethical statement grounded in internationally recognized guidelines. Where an author’s institution does not have a formal Institutional Review Board (IRB) or ethics review committee, authors must provide a letter from the affiliated institution confirming that it is aware of the research and is willing to be formally associated with it. This letter must be signed by an authorised institutional representative who is not part of the author group. In all cases, manuscripts must include a statement outlining how ethical principles were upheld (e.g., informed consent, voluntary participation, data protection, and community engagement). Submissions that do not include adequate ethical documentation may be returned to authors prior to peer review.
